Groundwork Southcoast, known as GWSC, is an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in 2017 and headquartered in New Bedford, Massachusetts, operating as a proud member of the Groundwork USA network of environmental trusts and recognized with the Candid Silver Seal of Transparency and a 1% for the Planet partnership. Built on the powerful belief that changing places changes lives, GWSC invests in the environmental leadership of youth and communities across the historically under-resourced South Coast communities of New Bedford and Fall River, Massachusetts, working at the intersection of environmental resilience, workforce development, community engagement, and social equity to build a stronger, healthier, and more sustainable South Coast for generations to come.
Through its three core program pillars, GWSC delivers measurable, community-rooted impact across the region. Its workforce development and youth employment programs invest in young adults through its signature Green Team, providing paid employment, career readiness, skill-building, and community leadership opportunities that build positive outcomes for individuals and families across New Bedford and Fall River. Its resilience and environmental stewardship programs improve environmental and community health through hands-on conservation projects, urban forestry, community gardening, food access initiatives, and the development of Resilience Districts that empower neighborhoods to adapt to the growing challenges of climate change. And through its community engagement programs, GWSC youth develop meaningful outreach skills while connecting their neighbors to resources, building a more vibrant, informed, and environmentally aware South Coast community from the ground up.
